The Special Section on NPD Job Trends in this issue of Visions is almost a “first” for us. It’s certainly the first time in more than eight
years that Visions has devoted so much space to
one topic. The last time we did this was October
2002 with an issue on globalization: “Global
NPD: Making It Work.” That issue received a
warm welcome. But it didn’t leave much space to
include additional material. So the PDMA board
instructed us to stay away from “one topic” issues
of Visions—and concentrate on providing a wide
variety of material in each issue. We have kept
that in mind up to the present.
However, today our situation is different.
Visions has expanded from 32 pages to 40 pages
or more, so we have plenty of room to include
both a Special Section and a number of other
varied articles on NPD trends and techniques.
That said, let me explain the urgency of this
NPD Jobs Special Section. First and foremost,
the recession of 2008-2009 hit NPD very hard.
It impeded the expansion of staff and budgets
and the field is just now recovering. Second, we
saw an information gap: very little seems to have
been written in the last decade on NPD jobs and
organizational structure. We felt by publishing
this section, we might inspire more research
and surveys—a boon to both the field and our
readers. In the Job Trends Special Section, three
articles focus on explicit recommendations for
career advancement:
Kathy Morrissey’s report on a new online •
study on NPD job searches,
•
•
Executive recruiter Steve Treibel’s detailed
article on how to thrive in your NPD career.
Outside that section two major articles focus on
new concepts and/or technology. Intel addresses the
continuing problem of how to select from among a
wide array of ideas that emerge in the ideation pro-
cess. They used the “Wisdom of Crowds” concept
to solve this dilemma in one particular situation. In
the second case study, the Dutch Internet company
9292 explains how it used “crowdsourcing” to come
up with ideas for a ground travel application.
In addition, the section contains descriptions
of two new academic programs in innovation,
as well as a detailed blueprint—and call for
action—from Gina Colarelli O’Connor—for
companies to create a new model for career
paths in the innovation function. We also have
some inspiring testimonials about the value of
PDMA’s NPDP certification for career advance-ment on page 41.
